| what are the symptoms?
do it your self,
take the floor out, transmision tunnel out, middle seat out, ge a big piece of thick wood and a rope or chain and lay it across the seat box, undo all bell housing bolts, remove speedo cable and prop shafts, and un plug wires... basically disconnect everything from the gearbox/ transfer box make sure the rope is support ing weight of it then support on a decent trolly jack and with one person holding rope from the top and one ( at a safe distance ) underneath lowering the jack drop the unit to the floor on a piece of ply wood or simular, wrap rope around hand brake drum and pull out side ways making sure you keep wood under to protect the drive way, undo the bolts split the transfer box and gear box apart being very carefull of the seal then simply bolt new box on and insert all back in place
best of luck cheers kieran |

| Which type of transferbox you have? LT230? In that case you only have to split the boxes while undernesth the car. Gearbox can stay in place. One evening hard work and its done. | |

| Same as the Range Rover Classic and Disco then. As Jaap (Cadarn) says, located on the side of the gearbox, the transfer box is a simple bolt off/bolt on affair dropped down WITHOUT removing the gearbox.
Even purchasing from the best gearbox specialist in the country - Ashcroft Transmissions of Luton - an LT230 exchange unit would cost approx. £450.
Perhaps exchange units could be sourced at an even better price because as I say, Ashcroft are the best ... then again their prices may be very competitive anyway? Really don't know so you'll have to hit the phone to find out. Best look at either the "gearbox" or "engineering" categories of Macks 4x4 info to find the nearest company to you to save on carriage, then start working outwards.
Alternatively you could of course pick up a secondhand unit for around the £100 - £150 mark. Always a risk factor though when buying used parts, depends on your finances if you can afford a recon unit or not. If you go down this route, again Macks 4x4 info is the way to go; look in the "breakers" category for companies near you.

| Since the exchange of a transferbox isn't that difficult and the change of getting a bad one isn.t too high ( boxes have a longerlife than gearboxes in my experience) I would opt for a used one. Furthermore exchange units are not that reliable, not even ashcroft ones. Been there, done that 2 gearboxes in 3 year | |

| ok take it from me, i dont like big heavy things floating around above my head, take both out, it'll possibly save lives, just remember theres a delicate seal inbetween the two when you take the transfer box out without the gearbox be prepared to loose it on the other hand as these two say just take out the tranny box then do so if you have a ramp, and correct jacking equipment
yes my way is longer but like i say its safer and its a doddle, tom a defender transfer box is differant to a disco one and a rangie one, a rangie one is the same as a disco one, a disco one is higher ratio and not as good off-road or at pulling trailers up hills but you will get a faster top end,
call me safety kieran but i like my life
cheers kieran |

| You right if you say you need to take out bottomplate and other covers. Much easier to replace the transferbox, It's much easier if you can lign it up from above. But alltogether transferbox isn't that heavy. Ramps are handy but not necesarry. Lying on my back worked perfectly. As you now I have some kind of defender too. Btw, what type of gearbox is fitted underneath you car Kieran? | |

Whatever you do don't tell Kieran ! He's still not recovered from their earbashing when he took Lenny's clutch plate back after it split having done less than 70 miles. He was accused of taking Lenny offroad and driving in the snow ! (by the way I though that was what 4x4's were for) Apology still required !

| If you were really wanting to poke your eyes out I don't think donkey poo would do the job. I reckon a more traditional approach of a sharp stick would be better. Donkey poo is just too sloppy.....unless its been around for a while them it might firm up a bit but even then it really wouldn't have the tensile strength required given the that it would also have to be in quite thin long strips. It could be very effective at gumming up the eyelids but that is some way short of eye poking. I hope you found this helpful but if you need to discuss it any further please pm Tom or somebody .... anybody in fact apart from me - I'm off to bed. | |
