| Hi, With all this talk about insurance, I thought I'd start a thread, nothing else better to do really! I'm in the midst of changing my insurance for travelling abroad, tried a few people, they all seem to do up to 60/90 days a year travelling abroad. Is this normal? Is there any specialists, for longer terms of travelling abroad? Also, does it need to be fully comp? Or will 3rd party fire/theft do? Cheers for any help, Mark Ps. 1 month today! | |

| Yay, only a month, wow still have too much to do!
Are you talking about personal insurance?
Not really got as far as sorting this yet, although i know you do get more of a discount if you have it lasting longer. Will ask Janet when she gets home, as she spent 2 years on it, i'm sure she know's a good deal more than me!

| Mark, I checked with my insurance company (Snowball) today - I have 60 days concurrent European cover - never thought to ask about how many 60 concurrent covers I could have in a year though... | |

| Mark, Morocco wasnt a problem - you have to buy it on the boat between Spain-Morocco.
As for the other countries, its normal practice to buy it as you drive into the country. Not entirely sure how it works, but I know it does in Mali (one of our guys had to use it - and it kept him on the right side of the police cell!!) Id also make sure you have worldwide personal medical evacuation cover.
Once out in the sticks, in the middle of Africa, in reality vehicle insurance is a bit pointless anyway - Big sticks and loud voices rule! Insurance for your possessions and liability insurance is far more important.

| Hi Jon, From the number of insurers I've rang so far, it seems if your covered for 30 - 90 days driving in Europe; 1. this is the total for the whole year, and 2. if you go over that limit, your full-comp cover drops to 3rd party only. I sure various people out there have different insurers with different rules and regs. From a little Mark | |

BJ said something about it costing £12.50 to add me as a fully comp driver for Europe (as I drive his Landy TPO in the UK on my insurance). IIRC, that's with Land Rovers own in-sewer-rants lot. Hopefully he'll stop complaining about the insturance people and let us know the details.

| Hi there, it cost £22:00 for APD to drive my LR fully comp, that's with Adrian Flux. Just got to find out how much for 4x4Bun now. Not such a good driving record for her having totaled her Suzuki. Rolled it, yehaaaa. The important thing is she walked away from it and got more from insurance than she paid for the car So just waiting to hear from Adrian. | |

| Sorted! Very good quote from Lancaster, and their green card covers all the countries we're going to, and more. Another thing off the list. Cheers, Mark | |

| Do you need to notify the insurer ?
I know they said we should just to be sure they keep track of how many days you are abroad, no other reason. I really dont get on with the insurance company as they ripped us off at the start and looking at my CERTIFICATE it is valid in EU so there should be no reason to notify them.
I also dont want the hassle of listing countries etc..

| I told my insurer, but only because I wanted the £30 European Breakdown cover that they offered. There were no questions of countries or miles - just dates for the breakdown cover, and which ports I'd be sailing to/from (again, for breakdown cover). | |

looking at my CERTIFICATE it is valid in EU so there should be no reason to notify them. Again, providing we are going to countries in Central Europe, I see no problem. Now East Europe and non-EU countries, now that's a different matter entirely.

| Good point. The font of all knowledge (on the odd ocassion) Wikipedia states:-
Relations between Switzerland and the European Union (EU) are framed by a series of bilateral treaties whereby Switzerland adopts EU law in order to participate in the EU's single market.
When that motorbike rolled into me last year at 1 mph on a Swiss mountain road the Old Bill checked my documents and they were perfectly happy. Personally I am 99.9% certain we're covered, but with all these 'grey areas', best advice for teams is to ask your respective insurance companies - just in case. Tom Mc Disclaimer No. 2,376
