All of the sites had mains hookups - 16A blue commando sockets, except Val D'Isere which had a mixture of those and EARTHED euro plugs (the ones with the pin in the socket for earth, not the side earth connections), and most of their hookups were 5Amps, so no good for kettles. Best take a Euro to commando adapter lead if you want to be sure.

| Just goes to show how I walk about with my eyes closed!!!
I guess it may have been different if I needed the 'leccy. I live on 12V, petrol and gas... and cold beer!

| This may sound like an odd answer to the hair straighteners, but Argos sell a gas powered set made by Babyliss for 12.99. Now idea if there any good as I left my hair straghteners at home last time because they were electric and didnt think they would be much use to me - plus Kieran was very short of space.
I do remember one of the other ladies had some.
Look on www.argos.co.uk item 442/8444

I daren't even ask what for??!?!?!?! He could probably rent them out.... I'm doing a great trade in GHD thermal fuses for the guys at work who need to fix their wives hair straighteners, and their wives friends, and wives friends neighbours.... 24 units in the last month leads me to belive that about 87% of all GHD straighteners are broekn at any one time.

| The Babyliss gas ones are good - although I didn't take mine on Landy Rally and opted for the just crawled out of a small tent look!

| I don't remember having much time to even think about improving the just rolled out of the tent look with muck other than a quick brush through!! However I did come home from work tonight to find Kieran using my hairdryer on his landrover ??? I'll leave you to guess what he was upto !! So maybe there are other uses for hair straighteners on an expedition ?? Apart from creeping up on Tim in his shower ! No on second thoughts !!! | |

They'd probably work on heatshrink insulation, for the post-fire electrics repairs.

| Good news - electric hook-up's a plenty at all the campsite chaps (and chapesses).
Tell you what though, I was asked at Manby why I needed a 600W inverter as I just fitted one to the RR. At the time I could only think of running the fridge (which apparently runs more efficiently on 12v I was told), charging mobile phones/camera batteries/laptop (all of which can be done at the same time) but forgot the one vital task it can perform ...
wait for it and yer gonna laugh ...
powering an electric blanket! Okay okay, when you've all finished splitting your sides, let me explain. Obviously of no use during Landy Rally, it would be a great asset over here in Spring and Autumn - the times of year when it can be glorious during the day yet at night the temperature can plummet. Haven't tried it yet, but 'er indoors who's not keen on camping anyway said she would be a lot happier in a tent with an electric blanket. A flippiant remark it may have been and initially it sounds daft, but why not? Makes perfect sense to me, especially as electric blankets hardly use any wattage at all. Tried it in a 240v socket off a power pack recently and it worked a treat, so off an wired in inverter it should be a doddle. For heaven's sake, it's not as if you're going to leave it on all night (which I image would flatten the vehicle's battery - or maybe not - what do i know?) but it's just to make life bearable by avoiding that horrible feeling of getting into a freezing cold sleeping bag. With a double electric blanket underneath, it would be cushtie.

| Even though your post is in Scottishese, for once I understood it 100% as what you say makes perfect sense. Now all I've gotta find is a "guid wumin" with "guid circulation". Few and far between in my experience, as cold feet seem to rule. | |
