| Would someone confirm if our CB radios have to be "fitted" in the vehicle or if we can use hand held ones?? The rules do say fitted but just wanted clarification please!

S***, I've just realised, Ive gotta figure out how to switch it to EU settings!!! I presume we'll be on EU channels?! For most rigs, hold down the AM/FM / AF / Bn button for a couple of seconds. If that doesn't work, turn them off, hold that button down as you turn them on, then figure out how to get CE or EU on the display (often chan buttons, then AF again). YOU DON'T NEED A FITTED RIG for the rally, but you REALLY DO need a proper aerial. If you've not bought a set, the Intek handheld with car kit's nice - and can be turned into a 10m Ham radio in about 5 seconds Handhelds will only have a range in the hundreds of metres if you don't have an external aerial. If anyone has any questions about CB's, PM me.... been messing with the damn things since '84.

| Couple of pics..... Twig is a Sirio 3000, well worth the extra couple of quid, v well made and good gain. SWR curve is flat for over 40 channels which is good news if your using UK an CEPT (EU) frequencies...... | |

| Hi All I have just realised that my CB is UK only It is a small Midland unit so my options as a replacement are limited to a size similar, Must be no higher than 35mm or I have to cut the dash . Two options I am looking at Midland Alan 121 Here http://www.4x4cb.com/public/item.cfm?itemID=1489 Or Precedent Henry II Here http://www.4x4cb.com/public/item.cfm?itemID=1558 Question is, is it worth paying the extra ? Any one with any experience of either of these 2 units appreciated. | |

| Depends what you're going to be using it for, and how it's going to be used.
If you've got a standard aerial, and just want to use the radio for laning convoys, etc, buy the midland - when you flood it, you'll be less upset.
If you're wanting a much more resitive radio, for DX'ing, the more expensive one. The auto-squelch is nice, but not worth the extra.

| What rig do you have at the moment Mel?
It may be possible to mod it to open up other channels and save buying a replacement.

| Hi
The CB that I have is a Midland 77-104 UK
Works fine just UK channels only (as standard anyway) was not aware that you could open it up to other channels in anyway.

It may be possible to mod it to open up other channels and save buying a replacement. I think they use a standard 'LC' PLL, so the mod would involve cutting the VCO output track, soldering the US/Euro chip over the bottom of the board for all the pins except the VCO pin, then putting a switch in to select between the two... Only a ten minute job, but you need to find the correct PLL, find somewhere to put the switch, bend all the pins on the new chip, solder it all in and it also makes it illegal in UK and europe. If you want to try it, find out which chip you need ... I've got a few US/Euro PLL's, if one of them's the correct type, you can have it. Better option: Buy the newer multiband, and when you're in the UK and expecting to do wading, put your old one back in!
