| Hi there, I don't know what Tom has planned but I hope we will NOT be going through it. I do not fancy looking at the inside of the tunnel whe we could be going over the mountains. We will be in the best 4x4xfar after all. I have never driven in the Alps but I have done the Pyrenees a few times so I don't know what to expect but that's the whole fun of it. | |

| I think Tom's back in Europe, wasn't he going back yesterday to finish the recon trip?
I've done some driving in the Alps, i'd also rahter go over rather than under, but i know it saves a significan amount of time, so i guess if it has to be done then thats the way it is. Fingers corssed it won't be!

| Well that was my thought also. Id like to go over the top.
Does anyone know the difference in time between over the top and through??
If its only a couple of hours then Id rather turn up to the campsite a few hours late (or set off early) to get there on time...

| I have done both as a passenger - the tunnel is a trip into hell. When you get out the far end you just want to pull over and cry. The whole section is about an hour: several tunnels, speed restrictions, neon lights, underground junctions. Believe me you come out praying for daylight.
Over the top you are talking an extra six hours or more driving - no kidding. The toll used to be about the same as the extra fuel required. I guess it may be a lot less now.
Looking at the route mapped out by Andy6bloke, I would guess Tom has the long way round in mind - thank Dog.

| Drove through the tunnel last year with Tom, very boring, speed restrictions everywhere, it's like being in a pc game with the lighting in there!! About 55 euros from what i can remember to go through. With Tom being an "over the top", type of guy I would imagine thats the way you will go!! | |
