| Going back to the boring stuff - Sun roof seals - turns out the part number is for a genuine Land Rover part and is available from the LR dealers for £10.62 + VAT. DP and Sales manager both said to me you have to replace roofs at £1100 as seals not available - the looks on their faces when they realised was priceless!!! I've got one coming for mine which will let me remove the duck tape which has to be said is working perfectly!! D | |

So wanna be there when the first thunderstorm lets in a torrent of water through the new seal. Come on, you should know better Bling. Land Rover or any British bike or car manufacturer have never been able to produce a seal that does what it says on the tin - actually SEAL! Stick to the duck tape is my advice, either that of invest in a good ol' fashioned Pacamac for when the inevitable occurs. Wonder if they make one in tartan?

| I was having the following chat with JC within a PM, so I've moved it here as it may assist others:-JC: Indeed we have already approached businesses re graphics on the Landy and will hope to meet them soon after recieving encouraging responses. Decided to set about making a front bumper at work as I'm not too keen on taking any risks with a brand new replacement which was fitted recently after someone kindly took the corner out of it at work. Main reason for making one is due to the daft Landy design of not having recovery points fitted from the factory. I ask you, no recovery points on a Landy eh? Don't they realise Landy owners are tempted to push the envelope? MY REPLY: Got to agree with you about the bumpers front and rear. I suppose it's all down to the ol' Optional Extra thingy again to make more money out of customers. That's life! An alternative with the front bumper - if you make one with 'proper' swivel recovery eyes (that would be my choice) then no problem, but if you wanted to retain the original bumper then simply fit a Jate ring underneath towards the front of the chassis rail. Although for Landy Rally a solid recovery point will not be required for "recovery from a mud hole" or similar, we insist upon one in case of breakdown more then anything else. If we're in the Pyrenees for instance, at least with a good anchor point we can simply drag you back to civilisation as it were. Don't think the AA/RAC venture into the mountains much! Your choice entirely. Sponsorship-wise you have to kiss a lot of frogs before getting some positive feedback, but when it comes it is soooooooo satisfying. My lad Deano, who with his other half is entering this year as an actual competitor (last year he was my co-pilot/navigator), texted me the other day all excited as he had just secured a sponsorship deal on tyres, so yes it’s great when it finally pays off. Main dealers are the definitely hardest to extract cash from, but even these have been know to supply a ‘spares package’ on a sale or return basis e.g. alternator, starter motor, UJ’s, etc. All things that can go wrong at any time on any motor, so are very useful to have on board. Return them to the UK unused in pristine condition, the dealership can simply put them back on the shelf for sale. Cost to you and them – nowt – yet locally having get their name slapped on your vehicle is good news for them, while you get peace of mind. Same can be done with your local independent 4x4 garage. Obviously aim as high as you can, but as money is tight at the moment, they may offer to prepare your vehicle for Landy Rally instead. This could be a simple service right up to full expedition preparation! You never know until you ask. They may for instance have a roof rack sitting out back they could donate to the cause – or a set of tyres, bumper, spotlights, whatever! Again … ask, it can’t do any harm. Go kiss a frog!!! | |

| hi everyone, just been reading this thread in great detail, i owned a TD5 disco for about 3 years a 2001, to be honest it was superb, as with every motor they do go wrong but very rarly the engine. i did a lot of miles (about 100k) in mine comuting to work in scarborough from scotland. If the milage is around 80k or above and head gasket has not been changed then they tend to go around this milage, not major problem mine only cost £300 ish at a independent landrover specialist, ( my current isuzu troopers head gasket went and they wanted £700 to take it apart to have a look). oh and never actually broke down just lost all power and went into a kind of limp home mode. We also had a bad leak from the fuel regulator to the rear of the engine which coarsed the rear wheels to slide on its own diesel on the exit to a very wet roundabout and my wife to spin 3 times then hit a crash barrier, easy to fix the leak but did a lot of damage to our disco. the sunroof always leak but this was more amuzing than annoying, mine was always wet by the sunvisor but as you exited roundabouts i got a drip onto either the gear lever or my right arm depending on which way i turned. then you have the 3 amigos this is the abs, traction control and hill decent warning lights, normally coarsed by a faulty hub, still drivable but no traction control so no proper 4x4, i found this out trying to tow my boat off a gravel beach. last but not least is the air bag self leveling suspention, this is a brilliant thing for towing but mine randomly decided to go down caused by a relay blowing, all that was needed was a new relay and went back up. i sound like i had a lot of faults but to be honest its just i did a lot of miles, it is by far THE BEST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED and i want another. i often did very large distances over very short periods of time, yes it went wrong but landrovers have a kind of inherant thing, they always get you home no matter what faults you have, i wish i could say the same for my current trooper. | |

Mmmmm, either that or the RAC! The point you make is so valid and I've said it for years - okay, we know Landy's are not the most reliable vehicles in the world and they have their limitations, but if they do go wrong, and every motor does eventually no matter what make they are, they are a damn sight cheaper to fix than Jap or Jeep 4x4's. Moreover, unless you're talking about the latest generation of Land Rovers e.g. Disco 3's, Freelanders or Range Rovers, all other Land Rover models are simply giant Meccano kits just waiting to be worked upon. It's a case of boys (okay - and girls) and their toys!

| Website's coming along a treat - good news about your tyres.
Here's one for you ...
One of Diesel Head's cousins once said in a movie - “Take your filthy hands off me, you damn dirty stinking human!”
Who or what said that line and in which movie?

Who or what said that line and in which movie? Cheers Tom, it will change extensively as the weeks pass. Yeah we were chuffed to secure the tyre deal and just waiting a date for a PR meet to be arranged. Is the question open to all or just non-Diesel Heads? Well as you didn't stipulate then I will hazard a guess at erm......hmmmm.......oh I don't know, how about RM in PotA?

| The question is open to everyone, only I would have though Diesel Head - your team mascot monkey - would know the answer as it was spoken by one of his cousins (i.e. an ape ... massive clue!) | |

| Not a bad guess and definitely on the right track, but Roddy McDowall played the ‘nice’ chimpanzee Cornelius so it couldn’t have been him. I’ll put you out of your misery, it was the gorilla Captain of the Guard (whose name nobody remembers) when James Franciscus who played Brent (not Charlton Heston as most people think – he was in the original Planet of the Apes starring as Taylor) was first captured by the gorillas on horseback with a net. Still on the ground he grabbed the leg of the Captain who uttered that classic line. Much ado about nothing I know, but I only thought of it as I read on your website that Diesel Head is a monkey. Obviously I've got too much time on my hands! | |
