PostSubject: Carrying Jerry cans!   Carrying Jerry cans! Icon_minitimeSun Sep 02, 2007 11:36 am

Hi everyone

We now have our new roof rack - donated by Dave and Colin from www.landrover4x4.co.uk - cheers guys! Cool

We are currenlty doing modifications to carry our stuff. Where are people storing their Jerry Cans - on the roof rack, on the vehicle or inside the vehicle? I know there are divided views - safer outside, but high centre of gravity on the roof etc.

Tweedie welded up some carriers when we were carrying them in the vehicle so we need to modify these. Can Jerry cans be stored flat on their side on a roof rack (with spout side highest up) or do they need to be stored on their end? Advice please!!! Very Happy

Kieran and I have had all the essentials on the drive today in an attempt to work out where everything can go. With 4 people in a 90 everything else will have to go on top. We reckon we can put two cans on their sides spout up in the front RH corner and fasten them with elastic bands )I mean luggage straps) to the roofrack side bars. Seems solid enough.

Will putting forty-something kilo's high up on one side make your steering behave differently depending on which way you are turning?

I suppose front right hand corner does mean you're more likely to get the driver of the person you just had a head-on collision with! Very Happy

We're going for fuel mounted inside to keep the weight down lower, and it's easier to when there's 20 angry <insert nationality here>-men honking at you for stopping on a narrow one-way street.

I'm working on making a mount frame for them on the roof, laying on there back, spout up (oh'er missus!)

Think thats the most stable and safest way. andyblke has a very good point with weight inside and low, but i don't like having the fuel inside the car, so has to be on the roof really.

Hi, I welded two hinges to the roof rack ladder and to those the jerry can holder. thisway the can could be folded away but serves better to be standing on. Two cans seem a lot of spare gas, considering we are not even leaving the EU Shocked

If you're in an incident harsh enough to break a fuel can, you've got worse things to worry about than diesel sloshing about. If you're carrying petrol, then I can understand the issue.

Don't forget Kaya that half of the teams have never left the 'safety' of England, so anything more than 20 miles without a fuel station they start to get uneasy.

Myself and Rafe will be stopping more than most, given that we have a thirsty V8 to keep hydrated. With the seats down in the Rangie, two or even three jerricans mounted amidships (directly behind our seats) should be fine. Yes I know it's petrol, yes potentially it could be dangerous, but if in the case of an accident if something were to penetrate that far into the vehicle, I dare say we'll be knocking on the pearly gates long before the jerricans are punctured! I'm far more concerned about the fridge being demolished, where will I keep my Chardonnay then?

I agree with Kaya, why we have to carry any fuel is a surprise to me. My Disco does 400 mies to a tank full. I know you use more fuel off roading but how much off roading will we be doing. Val d sare and Andora 2 days tops,. I plan to tank up each night before we park up. I'm sorry Tom if this sounds like dissent but this is how I feel about it. don't worry Team Thames Valley 4x4 Club will have the required 20lts but I most certainally don't want to be carrying any more weight than I have to, so 40lts no way. I will be carrying mine at the lowest point on the car and as far forward as possible, i.e. just behind the drivers/passengers seat, well that is the plan have to see what APD and 4x4Bun have to say about it.

400miles OMG.

Lucky to get 280 on easy runs. Snorkel and roll cage mean its like dragging a parachute.

I know a day in Dalby forest can consume a tank in itself.

Note to self - leave lead boots at home.

Dissent in the ranks????? Surely not? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I never said anything about 20 litres. I thought 10 litres of fuels was the requirement, and 5 litres of drinking water. Standard 'safety stuff' I would have thought.

Mmmmm - weight vs fuel ecomony. Me I'm only considering jerricans as a 3.5 needs constant feeding, hence I may be able to save a Euro or two by filling up in Andorra for Spain, Spain for France, etc. You guys do exactly as you see fit as I am well aware both and space are a factor ... especially as you'll have additional ballast - sorry, a young lady in the back of your Disco. Twisted Evil Seriously, I agree that you don't need to carry vast amounts of fuel, hence 10 litres is more than adequate 'just in case'.

ooooo Tom, you're gonna be in trouble when 4x4bun get's hold of you, not exactly much of her for that comment!!! ouch, it hurts 'cos i laughed too much!

We're taking 2 cans, mostly as prices are so variable, when it's cheap we'll fill up more, also you never know when you might need a little extra!

All I can say is bring a darn good gauze filter Mark, flakes of red paint in your Chablis ain't good. No

I hear tights are a good option, and according to LuckyTrucker, "you don't even have to wash them".

rather than jerry cans I'd bring a lot of warm clothing and good sleeping bags. I am in munich now and it is defenitely not warm and dry.

here are the aproximate Diesel prices along the rally route. All in € :

France - 1,092
Belgium - 1,125
Luxemburg - 0,974
Germany - 1,161
Italy - 1,20
Swizzerland - 1,075
Spain - 0,974

These prices are off the german automobile club and will vary of course

You forgot the best one - Andorra @ 0.84 cheers

You'll find that I have the fuel prices (unleaded and diesel) listed in the Road Book every time we cross a national border. Of course they won't be as current as Kaya's as they were listed in June, but regardless of daily/weekly fluctuations, it will give crews an idea of that particular country's level of fuel duty. I dunno, the things I do for you lot. Rolling Eyes

We'll definately be filling up in Andorra then!

The jury's still out on whether it's cheaper to run my V8 on petrol or vodka - with vodka at £1.80 a litre, amazingly there's not much in it.

Nah, reckon the RR would start wandering and swaying all over the road, after all it would be be well over the limit. drunken Very Happy

Hi there, I have a very tasty bit of equipment in my shed. It is a syphoning tube. It was attached to a marine outboard enigine petrol tank. It has a squeezy bulb and about 3/4 feet of tube. If we need to share fuel around it will be very useful. I have swallowed diesel before, NOT GODD affraid Must remember to pack it.

Thats the one good advantage in having Jerrys over the back of the motor (above the filler) and a CLEAR piece of tubing... No more sucking diesel!

As for yours truly, clearly petrol over the years is better for the complexion. tongue

Not sure about Petrol being better for the complexion than Diesel - I'll take your word for it...

What I do know is that whenever I work on BigSpenner's Disco and roll in fresh oil pools (running from his Disco) he keeps trying to tell me that dirty great big oil leaks are good and that working on said vehicle is good for me...

I think its more to do with maintaining a free source of labour though rather than his desire to keep me looking beautiful! At least I hope so affraid

Can't beat a bit of under car lubrication. There wouldn't be so many rusty Discos if they leaked more.
