| Would be grateful of any help regarding the essential things to take with us, especially from anyone who participated last year! My other half is going mental because he knows that trying to get me to take only the bare essentials is going to be a task in its self - so please please help me.... Cheers Kym | |

Underwear, loo-roll, toothbrush, sunblock, torch, deoderant, landrover, tent, sleeping bag, couple of t-shirts, Landy Rally sweatshirt. Anything else is a luxury Was chilly at night sometimes (snowed one night), but mostly a light jumper was enough. No need to pack thermals. Shorts may be an option, if your vehicles seats don't make them unbearable. Sunblock for whichever arm is hanging out the window.

Sunblock for whichever arm is hanging out the window. Spot on advice. Only thing I would add to that would be something to cook on, something to eat with and off and maybe a folding camp table and chair. Maybe a single chair is a bit harsh... to avoid a death on the event, perhaps ought to make that 4 chairs!

| Swimsuit - seriously, you'll find out why! Savlon - instant healing for cuts & abrasions. Insect bite stuff - always useful abroad. Breakfast pills - Anadin or similar for that hangover. Highlighters - for maps. Flip-flops - not essential of course but very handy to/from the showers. 12v Fridge - as mentioned previously, cold pop/Red Bull/etc. on the move sure helps. This doesn't have to be big, just a little 'un to keep a couple of cans cool. This in my book is essential. A simple to erect tent - believe me, you'll want to spend as little time as possible 'making your bed' so to speak. Besides, you'll be so tired you will sleep anywhere. Over-complicated, massive Gin Palaces are heavy to carry (thus using more fuel), difficult to erect, and a complete waste of time! No roof rack - unless you really have to fit one, and I know in your case being four-up you've no choice (many others also have roof tents) my advice is not to bother. The drag created on the move is frightening, leading once again to heavy fuel consumption. If you can get away with it, don't bother! Sense of humour - essential!!!Forgotten half of went on last year, so after the recce, I will able to refine this list further. Andybloke is spot on though, cut down the non-essentials as much as possible. You are not going to the Sahara or the Far East for a month or more, so a different pair of jeans every day for instance is not a prority. As for food, whilst I agree with VentureOverland that carrying basic cooking gear is useful, this too is not actually essential. We are in Central Europe after all, so food we know and are used to is plentiful at virtually all times (except in the mountains) plus at most campsites they will have a restaurant/cafe at decent prices, so most evening meals will be taken care of too. Rafe & I (my co-driver) only cooked once the entire journey, every other time we let someone else do the cooking ... and the washing up! And if you are ever caught short at a campsite food-wise, you'll be surrounded by teams you will either ask you to join them to eat or can provide every type of provision you could possibly need. Basically go light as much as possible. Your better half (opps!!!) I mean your other half is dead right, cut down on everything ... except beer & wine of course! | |

| Oh, I forgot some essentials: Mugs, coffee/teabags, spoon. Even if you haven't got room for a kettle, there always seems to be a team about that has, and has spare hot water when you desperately need that early morning cuppa!
If you really like your comforts, you may want to consider taking your own loo seat :!:

| Last year I was given orders one holdall only by our team leader Kieran. After a lot of packing repacking etc We ended up with one holdall between two of us. Four into one landrover 90 was definitely a tight squeeze. For me the essentials were - A small kettle and cooking ring for morning coffee.
The cool box for drinks on route. Most importantly the camera to record the whole event..
Oh yes and the CB radio.
We also needed a supply of headache pills. Our local Tesco's supplied toiletries in small travel sizes so whilst expensive cut down on space. My only thing that I felt I could have done with was an extra jumper in Val d'Isere plus a warmer sleeping bag as I was cold. Also flipflops were extremely useful or the showers.
We took chairs last year but only used them at one campsite. We very rarely pitched the tent in daylight anyway as we always seemed to be last to arrive at the campsite.
Hope you enjoy it

That's in the rules, so you shouldn't forget that. Roof Racks... Only take the roof rack if you need it. Try and load it as aerodynamically as possible (or borrow a streamlined plastic roof box maybe?). It's a good idea to measure how high it is, fully loaded, as there are low bridges in some towns and height restrictions on many of the toll road booths.

Hi Kym - welcome We found our roof rack very useful last year - for camping gear, recovery stuff etc. It frees up space in the Landy - a very useful commodity if there are 4 of you in there! It's up to you. Lu :bom:

| How could I forget the CB ??
It started off not working when we broke down and once Andybloke had had a look at it ended up providing much amusement thanks to the others in our convoy having a great sense of humour when travelling from Val d'Isere to Andorra.

| Is that Tweedie I spy up ahead, checking out how deep the ravine is as the track suddenly comes to an abrupt end? Or is he looking to see if there's any wrecked Discos to scavenge? Ah, but there's roof racks and roof racks. Yours looks okay Lu, but I reckon having a great lump of a slab-sided roof tent up top can't be good for drag. Then again, all it would probably take is a sloped deflector board on the leading edge, surely gotta make a difference? | |

| Ive jist bought a half size R/Rack. and a Halfrauds roof box thingy As ther are only 2 of us it will as said above free space up for our fridge and hair strighteners indoors. My thinking is that the tent, sleeping stuffetc to go on the roof so that when we arrive at camp its all in the one place. Also, if it rains................................ All the wet gear is up top and away from the straighteners. | |

| I'm taking the roof rack with a big slab of roof tent bolted to the top of it. I've put a halfords roof box on the rack in front of the tent to try and help slightly but to be honest the roof tent has been on there for about a year and it's never caused any issues. Does use slightly more fuel but the tents great, so i for one will have the full length roofrack on for the rally. | |
