| Hi Advice needed from those of you without SatNav. I bought the Michelin Europe road atlas Tom suggested, but when I got it home from WHSmith, it is a much smaller scale than the one suggested on the website . So I took it back, but they didn't have a larger scale one and the Michelin website only lists the one I got too . So I got a refund. Tom also said that the road numbers in France have changed, so I though we might wait and see if a 2008 version arrives :!: Has anybody found a good road atlas? Advice please Lu :bom: | |

| Hi Lu,
Yes, I actually brought that one as well, albeit with a spare book token, it's OK, but most of Europe is 1:1,000,000.
To get a 1:200,000 I believe only Michelin's regional maps suit.
The only one I found close was this;

| And it looks like Collins has launched their 2008 range of maps, so I expect you won't have to wait too long. | |

| I was planning to buy a map book the last few weeks before hand, just for the very reasons you've mentioned Lu.
although we have GPS tracking, and TOMTOM, i like to have a conventional map book too as they don't need batteries!!

| a map is a good idea for us too as the electrics in the landy are very unreliable, for example yesturday we went out and just as we were going up our street behind the radio starts giving out black smoke, this is not the first time either, so sat navs are good but if you cannot recharge them there not so good cheers kieran |

| Given the hassle with the road number changes, I would advise waiting as long as possible before purchasing the map suggested. A 1998 version would be ideal. BTW, the very same map was on sale in the Esso service station in Calais. Actually I never looked, but I would imagine the only difference would be the key on the inside rear cover which would be in French as opposed to English. Not so important as most symbols are self-expanatory and anyone can tell the difference between a National road and an Autoroute. So don't panic even if you map never arrives in the post in time, you could always acquire one in Calais as a last resort. | |

cheers kieran I guessing here but I suspect black smoke from wires is not a desirable "feature"... Run yourself a few fused lives and negatives direct from the battery and start using those for your leccy things. The last thing we want is to be towing a burnt our Defender around Europe for a week! I find the best wiring route is out of the battery box through the grommet for the alternator, along some conduit strapped to the top of the chassis rail, up into the engine bay and run along the top of the bulkhead and back inside the vehicle beind the dash instruments through the existing rubber grommets.

| Okay, so I'm still half-asleep from the reconnoitre, but at least my flux capacitor is still working fine thank you (may i suggest viagra to get over you little problem?) and believe me, seeing some of the drops on those moutain roads in the Alps, bet you a Series Landy could do 88 mph! | |

| As I've been telling folk individually, the Road Book is so good that if pushed you could do virtually the entire event without a map at all. Well, I would say that wouldn't I? Seriously, it is very precise. That said I wouldn't advise a "no maps at all" policy as the Pyrenees can bite back! I would advise 4 maps - France 2007 Edition 1:200 000 1 inch : 3.16 miles 1 cm : 2 km @ £13.99 from www.michelin.co.uk The 2006 version of this was called the Large Scale Map of Europe, Michelin Atlas Routier et Touristique 1/200 000 1 inch : 3.16 miles 1 cm : 2 km which obviously had France at its heart and the surrounding counties as well. This being the case, after reading your previous posts I've just realised that's why you've had trouble acquiring it - it's probably discounted. Opps! Plus, three small maps all off the shelf at W H Smith @ £4.99 each - 716 National ~ Belgium & Luxembourg (1:350 000 1 inch : 5.52 miles - 1 cm : 3.5 km 729 National ~ Switzerland (1:400 000 1 in : 6.30 miles - 1 cm : 4 km 574 Regional ~ Catalunya & Andorra ( 1:400 000 1 cm : 4 km) Although the large map of France does stray into bodering countries, the three small maps are for when the France map stops. Cross reference the Road Book with these and you'll have no problems at all.

| Yep, spot on. Also, have a butcher's at the RULES section of the event website as virtually all the rules have been amended/updated. Nothing you don't already know, but items like the 'competition numbers' had to be updated.

| Hi Tom, Got the 3 smaller maps, no problem. But the bigger france 07 map, my local smiths have run out, and are checking other branches. I could get it online, but not at £8 P&P, thats 3 bottles of your claret! But they have this is stock; http://www.mapsworldwide.com/sku_2497.htm It's a 1:500,000 Is this alright? Or shall travel into the big city on Saturday? Cheers, Mark Ps. if I see any hitchikers I'll send your way. | |

| Not really. You'll be much beter off with the correct Michelin map as it will tie in with the Road Book + the three you already have as not all maps have the same colour scheme for roads (the variations can be confusing) plus where I mention points of interest or landmarks en route, the other map may not include these. Sorry, looks like a trip into the BIG CITY is on. Besides, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a hitch-hicker or two (by my reckoning that's one each mate). | |

They had a few copies of the Michelin map in our local Waterstones, as well as WHSmiths. If you get stuck, let me know and I'll buy an extra one and bring it along on the rally, or I could send it by normal post- it can't cost that much??? (£8!!!) Tom - do we need smaller maps for Germany and Italy too? Lu :bom:

| Nope, 1 big 'un and 2 little 'uns, surely that's enough of Europe to stick pins in? Which reminds me, really must make up some sort of route for the event over the next few days. | |

| Having got bored with barbeque'ing Team Monstars Landy (its the wires you know) I thought I would sort out maps. By the time we get to Andorra we will probably have converted to steam power but will still need a map. I have found Michelin 574 Regional but its claims to be Aragon and Catalunya not Andorra http://www.mapsworldwide.com/sku_27487.htm Is this the right one or am I missing something ? | |

| Yes, that’s the correct map Keith.
‘ere, you notice how even a massive company like Michelin can’t get it right? Actually, it’s something that will affect you so need follow the alterations below. On their Michelin France 2007 1:200 000 1 inch : 3.16 miles 1 cm : 2 km (our bible for Landy Rally) despite armies of cartographers and computer geeks they have still omitted some ‘move to page ?? numbers’ on the edge of pages.
WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO: Go to pages 14 & 15. Top of page 14 a sticker needs to be attached to the top l/h corner (immediately to the right of the No.14) saying 6 with an arrow pointing north, then stick another 6 with an arrow pointing north immediately to the right of the spiral binding top of the page, then the number 7 with an arrow pointing north top of page immediately to the left of the No.15 This will make it a lot easier for co-drivers on the way back to Calais.
I have noticed this has happened elsewhere as well, but it’s only the missing numbers on pages 14 & 15 that will affect us.
