Is it a squeak or a squeal?

If it's a squeal, remove the cat from between the gearstick and hi/lo stick.

Sorry if youve already thought of this but its always best to start with the cheap/easy fixes first - are you sure it is the gearbox and not the power steering or alternator belt slipping. This might only squeal when you first set off. I hesitate to use the word "accelerate" as if its like my Disco it doesn't do much of that.

scratch Water pumps bearings dried up? Nah, can't be the as that noise would continue in any gear. Sounds like a slipping belt to me too.

Indeed. My Disco 1 did an awful lot of squealing in 1st setting off at T junctions but not going ahead ... any pressure on the steering wheel as I set off caused the belts to slip.

Turn on the headlights, heater blower and rear-heated window. Does it get worse? Look at the rev counter. If it says zero, the alternator belt is slipping. Creep forward and turn wheel from full-lock to full-lock. If it sounds like Lily Allen, the PAS belt's slipping. Verify by pouring a jug of slightly soapy water onto the belts while the engine's running - will go quiet (either because the belts slip without vibrating as much, or you drown the animal making the noise).
