| We are starting a list of spares we need to take. So far it has one entry - everything. Are we best to have a list of things to take or would a shorter one be those bits we don't need ? Any ideas welcome, recent problems make us think that wheel bearings are good to take and obviously bulbs etc. | |

| Hi Keith,
Welcome from team Land Rovers and wine.
The very question I asked; have a look at this link;
http://forum.difflock.com/viewtopic.php?t=6724
it will give you some ideas. My tuppence worth;
tools; I'm taking will be mainly for a series 111, didn't want to carry full sockets sets and only use a few of them.
spare parts; bulbs, gaskets & gasket sealer, fan belt, oils and greases, puncture sealant, spare wheels/tubes, and a few other bits and pieces.
camping and cooking equipment, fuel and water jerricans, recovery equipment.
But there are many more people on this forum who will give you sound and helpful advice.
What type of Landy do you have? See oyu in September, Best regards, mark

| My view is don't take to much and don't worry about breaking down. If you do you'll be carrying a load more weight and won't have room for important things like the odd bottle of beer.
There will be plenty of us out their and I'm sure we'll all do what we can to help each other out.
Make sure you give your vehicle a good service before you go. It's also a good idea to replace things on your landy with new parts and take the old used one's as spares. The last thing you want to find is that your new spare doesn't fit.
I'll be taking: 2x prop shaft UJ's Fan belt Wheel bearings Oils Bulbs(which are compulsory for EU countries) CV joint(used) Gaffer tape(millions of uses) Cable ties
Don't forget were going to be in Europe so spares will be readily available. I believe Tom is compiling a list of Landrover dealers in the countries we'll be visiting.
Oh and don't forget to extend your breakdown cover for Europe.

| hmmm Maybe best idea is don't forget spare pants! after the 4 day of wearing (after turning backwards, then inside out and front and back!) Really gonna start to be nasty!! On a mechanical note, i was thinking of a couple half shafts (just in case), the usual selection of belts, bulbs of course as legally have too, tyre (suggest 2 spares if using remoulds) Gaffa tape and cable ties (obviously, what landy is complete without those!) and a few other odds and ends. I've got a nice kitted tool bag, but may well bring the little tool chest as well, big selection of 1.2 inch, 3/8 and quarter inch stuff, so shouldn't have too many issues. Just looking at on board air system at the moment, so maybe even a couple of Air tools..... will see how it plans. | |

| Onboard air systems are great. I use my 8cfm engine driven one all the time...
The other thing that no-ones mentioned is chemical metal -- great for bodging holes in radiators, and other stuff.

| Okay, I'll say it as nobody else has ... an egg. Not for the radiator you understand, but for chucking at the first driver of a Jap 4x4 that laughs at the steam ozzing from your stricken Landy! | |

| While you're in Mothercare, don't forget to buy some Savlon. Highly recommended for hours behind the wheel. For what? For your behind actually. If it's hot in September, and it can still be really hot and sweaty, Savlon applied to the nether-regions is cool, soothing and prevents/cures prickly heat. Trust me - been there, got the t-shirt proclaiming I'VE APPLIED SAVLON TO MY STARFISH!
It's also extremely good for bites, burns, stratches, etc. Okay, vary rarely will we bother with a plaster for little scratch or a graze as it's not a 'cut' as such, but slapping on a bit of Savlon instead is a very good habit whilst touring foreign lands. Granted this would be much more relevant in Africa, Middle and Far East, etc., essential even given their lack of hygiene, but even in Europe a grazed toe turning septic does not make for pleasant motoring.
Slap it on!!!!!

| Found whilst surfing for something completely unrelated..... may (or not!) be of use.....
1. Land Rovers spares kit - "Example parts and workshop tools list for Landrover in situations where there are no available spares" http://www.aidworkers.net/?q=node/703
2. Preventative Maintenance Checklist for 4WD Vehicles http://www.aidworkers.net/?q=node/709

| While it's a seriously handy list if you're heading off to Outer Mongolia, don't think it's too relevant in Western Europe. Also, the title says it all:-
Land Rover Recommended 12 month spares pack
That said, keep hunting for lists like this as collectively they will give you a darn good idea of what to actually take. Personally I go with the ‘keep it basic’ and lightweight approach as we won’t be in barren isolated Africa or Asia, so civilisation and a Land Rover spare parts department is never that far away.

| Yeah, slightly overkill to say the least, but thought the fact that it also had land rover parts numbers on, means that if the worst happened, even if we can't speak the required local tongue, showing a gree noval with a part number may well be of use.....
Quite amused also by the quantity listed too, does this give an indication of likely failure or what!!! just as well they don't show it to prospective new owners!!

| pants, poo, eggs, Savlon ... trust you realise you can be arrested in some countries for carrying that lot on board! Plus of course there's the ever-versatile condom - great for keeping your weapon dry when fording rivers I hear. | |

| Basic kit for touring;
1, mobile and CB to call for help,
2, folding chairs to sit in while we wait for help
3, cool box to store essentials (for the co driver) while we wait for help
Might also include a few basic tools and spares, are people taking a second spare wheel, is it worth losing the space, I assumed it would be easy to find a place to have a tyre fixed in Europe?

| Hi Ardvark, Love the basic kit approach! Personally, taking 2 spares, but only because I can fit one on the bonnet. But garages shouldn't be to far apart, hopefully! All the best, Mark | |

| We've been to Paddocks in Matlock to buy lots of spares and servicing stuff today (can you tell I'm the Land Rover technical one in our team?!). Also got a 4' Hi Lift jack and rear diff guard. Paddocks were excellent as ever - very patient whilst we crawl under and over the Disco looking for numbers and stuff and very reasonable prices. They deliver too in UK (free over £50 online) and Europe. Check them out if you need servicing bits - www.paddockspares.comFeels like were on our way now! Just need new tyres (2 spares as we are using remoulds) and money for lots of diesel! Lu :bom: :bom: | |

| aarrrghhh not paddocks?? Long story, but just check everything you've bought from them very very carfully, and if you think it's not working or faulty, it probably isn't, so get back to them straight away!! Anyone who want s the story, let me know, but i'll not post it here as it's my personnal experience, and don't want any libal cases!!! | |

We've used them for years and always found them good. They're local to us (well 30 miles away), so handy for us as well.
