| Is it a squeak or a squeal?
If it's a squeal, remove the cat from between the gearstick and hi/lo stick.

| Sorry if youve already thought of this but its always best to start with the cheap/easy fixes first - are you sure it is the gearbox and not the power steering or alternator belt slipping. This might only squeal when you first set off. I hesitate to use the word "accelerate" as if its like my Disco it doesn't do much of that. | |

| Water pumps bearings dried up? Nah, can't be the as that noise would continue in any gear. Sounds like a slipping belt to me too. | |

Indeed. My Disco 1 did an awful lot of squealing in 1st setting off at T junctions but not going ahead ... any pressure on the steering wheel as I set off caused the belts to slip. Turn on the headlights, heater blower and rear-heated window. Does it get worse? Look at the rev counter. If it says zero, the alternator belt is slipping. Creep forward and turn wheel from full-lock to full-lock. If it sounds like Lily Allen, the PAS belt's slipping. Verify by pouring a jug of slightly soapy water onto the belts while the engine's running - will go quiet (either because the belts slip without vibrating as much, or you drown the animal making the noise).
