Humberside, East Yorkshire, what's in a name? I like the story where in the 1980's run-down decrepit Battersea was invaded by Yuppies, who promptly renamed the rat-invested hovel as it lay south of the river (Thames) from Fulham and Chelsea.

What did they call it? South Chelsea of course! Nothing like a decent location to drive up property values ... and it worked! I dunno - "South Chelsea Dog's Home" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Now this is the boss of the kitchen here !!

I have enough trouble persuading Kieran to put pots in the dishwasher ! He's got NO chance whatsoever of putting bits of Pinky through my dishwasher. Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Mind you at current progress outside three days later and still no sign of a timing belt broken or otherwise. Lots of noise though. The neighbours must really love us !!

Laughing the big hammer approach,
we really didnt expect everything to be so tight and rusted on but just the pulley dampener to come off now,
Quote :

have you tested the oil pressure switch and indicator light?
id like to say that i had, but i noticed recently that james land rover has lots of dash board lights mine doesnt, one of those ( since the bulkhead change) is the oil light
tomorrow we go to paddocks with a big shopping list, and hopefully fit all the bits by sunday evening so i can spend monday putting that last bits back togather

wish us luck

thanks for the good advice, look forward to more
cheers kieran

Good luck with the pulley - you'll need it. Can be as stubourn as an Ox to shift. You'll need a BIG breaker bar at least. Ive done a few over the years and I ended up making a 10mm thick steel plate that I could bolt over the front of the pulley and then crank the engine over so the plate wedged against the chassis rail, thus loosening the beast!

Having said that Ive done one before where it wobbled on the shaft... The timing belt was the least of my problems on that car!

hello,
at last some good news to share cheers
went to the garage last night and spoke to richard the garage man and he knew he had made a puller but it was 8 years since he last used it, so he made another one for us to use, it looked a little like a small stub axle with a big bolt through the middle, worked a treat

got the damper off, then struggled abit with the timing belt cover but that came off to reveal a snapped timing belt and the tensioner pulley to be wobbley so we got a replacement one and then we took off the rocker cover to find 3 bent push rods, as bob from paddocks said there only 1.85 each replace them all so we did
we were given the wrong gasket for the timing belt cover so we will have to go back on monday,
anyone got any tips on the tappits and setting up the timing belt?

cheers kieran

Read and re-read the relevant section in the haynes manual until you're spotted all three spelling mistakes in that chapter, and can point to them with your eyes closed.
Also, mark things and photograph things before you start and as you go.

Make sure things are well lubricated, and once the engine's mostly reassembled, but before torquing up the head bolts, whip out the glow plugs (to break compression) and turn the crank through four complete revolutions by hand to make sure things really are aligned in the right manner, and aren't going to crash valves or bend pushrods.
Do you have a diesel compression tester?

It gets a lot of stick but the Haynes manual is good for telling you how to do the belt.

From memory you need to turn the crank (by hand) to get exactly top dead centre. All timing sprockets should then be lined up. I suspect however that your cam shaft will have moved a tooth or two out of sync and so will need a little extra movement to align the markers on the timing case and thus line all the valves up correctly with the pistons.

just realised you may have the head off as well to inspect the valves???

Did you get new push rod guides/seals or just the push rods? If just rods, simply drop them in the holes. They will make themselves a perfect fit with the valve stem over time.

Be careful when you replace the 3 (??) little bridge shaped pieces that hold the camshaft in place. They are not all exactly the same and snap easily if you put them back in the wrong spot!!

have fun.

nothing like chucking a spanner in the works as what we seem to have found today,
the timing belt housing and setup doesnt appear to be that of a 200tdi scratch
we know this as the gasket we have for a 200tdi is very differant to what we have, in shape and position of the cogs,
at first we thought it was aa 300tdi from the haynes manual but then we looked abit harder and compared differant bits and it appears to be the timing belt housing/setup from a 2.5 n/a engine scratch how can this be?

the part number on the timing belt houseing cover is HRC2252
the engine number on the recipt from the engine transplant appears to be differant to the one on the engine
the recipt number is i i 204099a
where as the number printed on the engine is 11L04099a
can anybody advise anything at all? ( other than scrapping it tom )

cheers kieran scratch

When you go back to PAddocks on Monday for the bits you're missing, take a selection of photos and ask them.

Or post the photo's here and mud club, see what people think.

well pinky will live to play "whats that coming over the hill" another day

we got around to putting the timing belt on on friday and then to turning over the engine today, except it wouldnt start at - 3 with ice and snow everywhere patience wore thin and we dragged pinky to the garage to find we were only one tooth off of the timing and to hear it start up ( such a comforting sound after so long ) so the reconstruction begins tomorrow Very Happy

im glad to see the the toatal repairs bill ( not including tools brought ) has only been £116.95

will be able to move on to temporarilly painting the bull bars and checker plate green :alien:

Well work continues outside. I keep seeing allsorts of odd bits being waved around before they disappear back into the engine bay area.

Why is it when vehicles decide they need some tlc it is always a combination of windy/raining/icy or in excess of + 30 degrees C ??( I bet they wish it was!)

I'm hoping they can get Pinky properly mobile as its now parked behind my car - someone mention work in the morning lol! lol!

Nice one! Well, the day's finally arrived - after 6,000 Landy Rally miles plus a year's worth of running about the country going to shows and events, the Rangie has actually broken down. Water pump not sounding healthy. So unreliable these Land Rovers! Laughing
