Great news! Had a word with the organisers of the show and Landy Rally will have a Club Stand at the event 29-30 September 2007. Their website is http://www.abingdon4x4festival.com

Being a week after the finish at Calais, I would say this is the perfect opportunity to all meet up for a post-event party and a chance to invite family, friends and sponsors along to meet up with the rest of the teams and crews. Whilst still fresh in the memory, there will obviously be a few tales to tell, so it would be great to see as many as possible in attendance. Besides, with all the cheap booze we'll be picking up en route like French/Italian/Spanish wine, Andorra duty-free spirits and slabs of beer at Calais' booze warehouses, a party just has to be done.

All those in favour say AYE!

Houston, we have a problem. Just found out at this weekend that the London-Brighton Land Rover Run is on the very same weekend as Abingdon 4x4 Festival. Seems as though it wasn't the fault of either organiser, it was decision by Brighton Council that caused the clash of dates. This being the case, I have come up with one of my cunning plans.

How about we attend Abingdon on Saturday 29th Sept (many arriving the night before so can have a little post-Landy Rally party at the beer tent) then set off in convoy at 4pm Sat and head down to Crystal Palace where we can camp overnight (no beer tent but plenty of pubs and local eateries where we can have a spag bol, greasy kebab, Chinese or Indian) then back to the site where the party atmosphere carries on into the wee small hours, then off down to Brighton Sunday morning alongside a few other like-minded enthusiasts – last year 814 to be precise! Yes it’s BIG!!!

An interesting passage lifted from their website report for 2006 says the following:-

This year 30 different clubs attended and club vehicles accounted for 265 runners, whereas last year (2005) the clubs accounted for just 90. I think this tells us that clubs are becoming more organised, even the national clubs can organise attendance……. We need clubs….. Without them it would be difficult to fully enjoy driving and owning these vehicles. When the dark forces of the press and the State are set against us if we don’t hang together, we will hang separately.

Couldn’t agree more. Taking this on board, I have decided this event (along with Abingdon 4x4 Festival) can be the launch of the much heralded Landy Rally Club, an exclusive group which, like the Camel Trophy and Tomb Raider crews in previous years, will grow annually as more ‘members’ automatically join free of charge as they take part in forthcoming events - Landy Rally 2008, 2009 and so on. However, unlike Camel Trophy and Tomb Raider who will always have a maximum number of vehicles (they no run the Camel Trophy and Tomb Raider vehicles were a limited edition), the big difference will be that for as long as the Landy Rally event continues, then numbers will swell year upon year. YOU however will always be the vanguard, the founder members!

I realise it’s a pain having two events on over one weekend, but at least the teams from the north of the country will have a fighting chance of meeting up at Abingdon (albeit a fair ol’ distance), and I suppose to some extent the same is true of those living in the south as they will have to travel up to London before heading back south!

Whatever – your thoughts please.

Yeah sounds like a great way to combine too events in one weekend, think we'll be up for it if we're free that weekend.

Do you know what the costs will be for the events?

Hi there, we regularly go to Abingdon as a club, it is a quiet show but as always a good chance to meet old friends and make new ones. They do however have a cracking off road course.
So TV4x4 will be doing Abingdon and Team TV4x4 maybe doing L2B. See you @ Calais

Agreed, it is a good off-road course. Essential for encouraging new people into the fold, has it still got a 'first-time friendly' play area?

Yeh, just had it confirmed, we'll be there too.

Unfortunately we will be on a trading stand, rather than just holding up the beer tent, but feel free to come and say hello.

We arent taking the marquee and a full compliment of stock, just stuff that will go in the back of the 110.

Hi,

Haven't been to Abingdon before, hoping to catch up with some of you there.

Are there focal points? Or just an open space, full of traders/sellers etc?

All the best, Mark

Mark,
Its a little (relative to Peterborough, Billing & Driffield) show and is somehow distinctly different. Its in the middle of an old(???) air base with next to no facilities... Although there is a big Tesco's with clean toilets not too far away!

It's a nice little off-road course with a few trade/club stands thrown in. It's on what was RAF Abingdon Airfield, but now occupied by the Army as Dalton Barracks.

I'm marshalling Sat AM, but will happily jump in your passenger seat and talk you through the course on Sat PM. Your motor will cope with all but the most extreme sections.

not sure mark, i know Tom has a club stand for the rally, but i don't know if thats where we camp, or if camping is in a different area.
We're going from Friday evening, and staying until sunday, so will be around, some are leaving on Saturday night to go to London, so there will be space for you!
Are you bringing the leaky tent?

You can just turn up, but you can also download/print/prefill a registration form (for off-roading & spectators) by going to www.abingdon4x4festival.com which might save a bit of time.
