I suspect you'll be OK for a good while yet. Defo wants sorting before September though.

| hello, yestuarday i eventually got around to having a look at pinkys breather pipes and found nothing that struck me as unusual untill i took off the breather pipe that runs from the sump up to that black filter thing that comes out of the rocker, it wasnt blocked but it was half full of oil and when i took the pipe off oil continued to come out of the upwards facing connection into the sump is this supost to happen? today after coming home from work i got a random urge to attack the checker plate with the wire bush on the drill and the results came out amazing! but when i moved it back to were it normally parks i noticed a suprisingly large patch of oil for the 15 mins it had been parker there. on closer inspection i hadnt refitted the breather pipe ( the one that runs from the sump up to the black thing ) at the top end meaning that alot of oil had come out changing the engine oil level from near full to under half is this normal if that pipe isnt refittied properly? i shall bring my trusty yellow bucket to your house andy cheers kieran |

| By definition, a breather shouldnt be full of oil, otherwise it would be called a pipe!
Im not 100% confident but I suspect there should only be air in that pipe.
That would certainly explain why your pi**ing oil everywhere!! The question though is why the bottom half of the breather is full of oil in the first place.
How are you determining your correct oil level? With the dipstick or by volume? It isnt unknown for people to use the wrong dip stick, just because it fits! As your engine wasnt originally a 200tdi it is possible you have the wrong dipstick. To be certain, I would drop ALL the oil out of the sump and with the breather off the bottom and fill by volume (as per haynes manual for a 200Tdi (I cant remember how many Litres it is)). Go careful though, as you may loose some oil out of the breather neck - if so, its supposed to be full!

| interesting i just swaped my dipstick for my dads dipstick ( his is 200 tdi) but it was differant and when it came out it said my oil level was about 700% above what it should be so i pretty sure that test was unaccurate |

| in the haynes manual it says 6 litres for it but the picture of the 200tdi engine does not look like what i have, would it be possible that when the engine was swaped some of the old things like the turbo were left in place?

| infact upon studying the two pictures side by side it appears that the dipstick is in the same location as a ""19j engine"" |

| Kieren, Can you email me a photo of your engine and I'll see what I can find out.
Im pretty sure you have a 200Tdi and not a 2.5 Turbo, though I do remember you have 2.5 Air filter box, brake servo etc etc.
A picture of the sump (side on) would also be beneficial.

| Hi Kieran, Sorry, just got back on the forum after a while. I think you mentioned she's 21yrs old? and 19J? This points to the engine being a 2.5TD, and your Landy the "County" type. The "Defender" wasn't introduced until 1990, along with the "new" 200tdi. So unless yours has had a swop, I'd say a 2.5TD. But the breather pipe is in the wrong place? Has the head been swapped? Have fun! | |

Is that actually a sump breather, or the oil-seperator drain pipe? Oh, and on the "What engine is it, actually?" front ... what's the engine serial number indicate? These things just occured to me while looking for the source of my JTD's new oil leak. (Oil temp sender's cracked. Ho, hum. About due an oil change anyway).

| Had another look at your pics, sober , in my humble opinion; I'd say that's a 2.5TD engine, with a what looks like a 200tdi rocker cover on. Which explains why the breather is on the side and not on top. Though I could be wrong, having delved into my pockets of knowledge and finding they're not as full as I thought they were! | |

| That's better! Tip; don't look at pics sober! That is a 200tdi, albeit with some modifications. Nice paint job, but it's time to break the bank and get her to a pro, me thinks, otherwise you'll spend all your time fixing her, but not really curing the problem. | that would cost money thats my last resort plan, last night i was speaking to a guy who rebuilds land rover engines for a living and although he took until 1 am to make a decision he said that the spil rail is wrong for a 200tdi and he will get the correct one priced up for me and send me some new injector bolts for 20p each ill see what effect that has, thankyou just got to hope it makes it to leeds and back this weekend cheers kieran |
