At the moment our Shogun is running with normal road biased AT's on.

would they be ok to do the offroad bits of the rally, or do i need to shell out on some new boots.

There's very little wet mud.

I didn't hear of anyone getting stuck (except Cookie Monster, who obviously thought the bit in the briefing about the muddy ponds being off-limits because they had wildlife in them didn't apply to them) at all.

70on/30off AT's should be fine. For the wooded sections, you're only supposed to go in in convoy anyway. Most tracks, and the Val d'Isere area, are compacted clay, coarse gravel or dry lanes.

So long as they are still in good condition you'll be fine.

When changing time comes though Id recommend BFG ATs.

I concur, even basic road tyres are okay (all except for the optional climbs and descents of Val d’Isére) so ‘all terrain’ tyres would be exactly that, the ideal compromise. Even if we did get a shower and things got slippery, there are no actual rutted sections as such hence nothing major to overcome, plus you would never be on your own anyway.

As has been stated on numerous occasions, we all know our vehicles are capable of tacking a whole lot more than we’ll encounter on Landy Rally, only we would rather like to keep our vehicles together and in one piece than go breaking them in the middle of the boonies! Mud-plugging and rock-crawling we can easily do at home where vast distances are not a consideration. “Gentle off-roading” it is then.

Now I do remember seeing a few of your photos Kieren that are well suited to that rubber - seem to remember you getting a tow as well!!

Take your point Jon, but fair play to Kieran, he is only following the correct code of conduct for true off-roaders - if you haven't been stuck at least once in the day, you haven't been trying hard enough! Wink

Tyres Dscf1111
and coming out with it hidden Laughing
Tyres Dscf0710
Tyres Dscf0411
yes there were two land rovers and several tens of metres of tow rope in that last pic, an yes the air intake was below water pale Laughing lucky they knew what they were doing

but its the pics like this that make me want to have all that fun, but still want to do the rally!! so ill follow toms advice as i advise you should do and not go off-road from now untill the rally as you really dont want to miss out on this ...
Tyres Dscf0710

Cant say Ive ever replaced one. I think on the standard Defender axle its not a bad job - can be done from the outside.

Salisbury axle though needs to be done from the inside - I think...

No idea about jap stuff though!

To start the front end weeping again... just add oil!

By the way, unless you're lucky enough to have a good motor factors near you with decent prices, the best place for cheap oil is Asda. About £4.50 per 5 litres if I remember rightly. Of course it's no substitute for synthetic oils if you're running a RR Sport or Disco 3, but for the majority of us it's perfectly acceptable for an old Landy, Disco, Rangie or Paj.

Besides, as has already been stated, in the case of Landies it comes out very nearly as fast as you can pour it in! The Brits have never been able to manufacture a decent oil seal, that's why old British bikes never rust - like a Land Rover chassis they are always covered in a layer of gunk.
